5 years ago today ...

We got our little Goldilocks.  We already had her baby brother when the social worker told us she needed to be moved from her foster home to another.  Since we already had her brother we were given first dibs.  She was a tiny child that was in clothing sized for 6 to 9 month olds, even though she was 20 months old.  She was a very unstable walker and did not smile for more than a month after we got her.  We actually spent weeks practicing smiling with her in the mirror.  The picture below was taken about a week after we got her.

Happy Gotcha Day, sweetheart!  It has been a really long road for all of us, but we are so blessed to have you.  We celebrated with pink cupcakes (of course) with white frosting and pink candles.  Our kids Gotcha Day is the day they came into our home instead of the day they were adopted.  After all, they were our foster kids for 2 years before their adoption was finalized, and they don't really understand the difference between being our foster kids and adopted kids.  Once they walked through the door, they were ours, as far as they were concerned.  However, we worried a lot about whether we'd ever get permission to adopt them!

Blessings,

Dawn

  2. Belated Happy Gotcha Day!! She was (and I'm sure is) a cutie pie. You did a great thing, and I know you were all blessed.

Your rearranged room looks great! I don't have the same issues, but have some of the same troubles trying to help Marissa and Daniella on 2 entirely different levels. Marissa also can't work at the same table I"m working with Daniella. Tricky times call for imaginative moms!

  7. I was in foster care as a teen, which I think makes me feel especially warm when I hear of little ones going into loving homes. I pray more loving families will feel called to it. Blessings!

  8. That is so awesome. She is beautiful. Sounds like there is a lot of love at your home. Thank God she is with her brother and people that will love, protect and teach her.

  9. Happy Gotcha Day!! Our Gotcha day is only one day after his birthday so we don't do an extra celebration. When his adoption was finalized, I wanted to have that day for celebrating but we never did. I do think about it when it comes around though. Sometimes I will pull out the pictures and show them to him and tell him who everyone is.

  11. Happy Gotcha Day Goldilocks!

I've seen the foster care system from the perspective of working as a social worker in the state "system" for five years...I'm thankful to be at home with my own kids now, but will never forget all the little ones I met along the way and I know that parents like yourself are a rare find! Blessings.
