Show and Tell Friday ~ Christmas in October?

To see more great show and tell entries go to Canadagirl.

I know it is October and this entry is a bit ahead of time, BUT I need some advice.  I was at the used book store the other day and found some nice Christmas books to add to our collection.  I want to have 24 Christmas books by December 1 so that I can wrap them,  and we can open one each night to until Christmas day.  It sounds like a really fun Advent calendar of sorts.  I saw this great idea on someone's blog last year and I have looked forward all year to using it.  So what I need from all of you are any book ideas that you feel are "must haves" in a Christmas book collection.  I currently have 18 books but some of them are twaddle, so I need at least 6 more.  The kids sit well for about 30 minutes of story time at night.  Also, we do not do Santa so I'd prefer no books about Santa.  Here is what we have so far...

The Christmas Story~Carol Heyer

The Fright Before Christmas~James Howe

The Dog Who Found Christmas~Linda Jennings

The Steadfast Tin Soldier~Hans Christian Andersen

The Christmas Day Kitten~James Herriot

The First Christmas According to Luke

A Pussycat Christmas~Margaret Brown

Woodland Christmas~Frances Tyrrell

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey~Susan Wojciehowski

The Chanukkah Guest~Eric A. Kimmel

The Gift of the Magi~O. Henry

The Legend of the Poinsettia~Tomie dePaola

The Crippled Lamb~Max Lucado

Grandfather's Christmas Camp~Marc McCutcheon

The Christmas Candle~Richard Paul Evans

The Biggest Snowman Ever~Steven Kroll

Merry Christmas Strega Nona~Tomie dePaola

Jingle the Christmas Clown~Tomie dePaola

I would love to have your ideas!  Now I better get onto October activities.  I have five apple pies to make.

Blessings, Dawn

  1. I posted this last year but don't know if it was me you got the idea from. I love doing this too. The kids are so much more excited about the book too because they get to unwrap it. Here is the link, it shows many books. http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/SchoolinRhome/433922/

Our stories don't include Santa either (even though he is pictured on the front of one. That book has many stories and some are so cute. (We avoid the others in it) I should recover it but the kids don't even bother about it, they just think it is a "Pappy"

I hope you find your books. Check local recycled book stores. They usually have some and are cheaper than new books.

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Oh, what a beautiful holiday tradition you are beginning this year!! Sorry I don't have any recommendations right off the top of my head - I'm still waking up, LOL. But if I think of any, I'll be sure to come back and let you know. Happy Book Hunting!

Thanks for sharing, and have a lovely weekend!

  3. A must have is The Littlest Angel. Makes me cry every time. A beautiful picture story book.... obviously not "true" but precious!

Here is the link to amazon: (hardback) But it comes in paperback too. (not as nice!)

  5. Thanks for sharing your books! We do something like this, too. We wrap up the books and put them in a basket and choose 1 each night during Advent. Thanks for the reminder that I need to look into this :)

  6. We used to read a story about "The Animals Christmas Eve." I can't remember who wrote it, but it was about the animals that were with Jesus on the night he was born. We loved that book.

I think that is a great idea that you have, btw.

  7. This is a fabulous idea!!! We don't do Santa either, but my brother does with his kids. To offset the questions I knew I would get from my very inquisitive kids, we would do a book I found about St Nicholas. I tried finding it to give you the title, but was unsuccessful!! I believe I purchased it years ago at the Family Christian Bookstore. I'm sure CBD or Berean would have wonderful christian variations!!

    Hope this helps!!

Thanks for a wonderful new tradition to start!! he he he

  8. What a neat idea! We don't do Christmas either, but enjoy Santa, Are You For Real? by Harold Myra. Christmas Day In The Morning by Pearl Buck is another favorite.

  10. What a wonderful idea and tradition. The Story of the Candy Cane...There are several stories out there about this but one that is very colorful. Please post after Christmas and tell us all how it went!

We do a 25 days of Christmas Craft and Scripture. Traditions are awesome!

  12. What a great idea! Two books we enjoy that you don't have listed are:

"One Wintry Night" by Ruth Bell Graham (takes more than 30 minutes though)

"Caleb's Colt" by Jill Briscoe (May be out of print but I found it on Amazon)

I bought a new one this year called "What God wants for Christmas" that comes with a read along/sing along CD.

I'll have to start collecting more books as well. -- Amy

  14. Hey Dawn,

That's a great idea. What about The Little Drummer Boy. I don't know a specific author but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

    good luck,

  15. The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy.

I can't remember the author off the top of my head, but it is a sweet Christmas book and I think with your adoption background you will like it. We've enjoyed it for years.

Great idea to read a book each day! I'd be excited too. Next time I'm up in the attic (later this week) I'll look in my Advent box and see what books I have in there. Oh, OH, I know......

The Christmas Tapestry by Patricia Polacco

    This is a MUST read.

An Orange for Frankie by Polacco is good, too, but very sad.

    I hope that helps.

  16. That is a great idea, Dawn. I'm sorry I can't think of any book in particular to contribute, though! When you compile your list of 24 books, you'll have to tell us what the rest are and which ones you like best.
