Geography with Flat Stanley

I decided to have some fun with geography this coming school year. We are going to be sending out a half dozen Flat Stanley's to places unknown to us. Then when they return, we will learn more about some new areas and track where he went on a world or U.S. map (depending on where he goes).

Here is where you all come in! Would you like to receive a Flat Stanley? The idea is a Flat Stanley will be sent to your home in August. You then can take him to a neat landmark or two in your area (God made or man made) and take his picture with it. The landmarks do not need to be famous...just what makes your area special or unique. Fill out a very short one page journal and send him, the pictures, and journal back by November 15th. If you really want to have fun with him, you can send some brochures from your local visitors center. You may add whatever you like to his adventure.

Basically, we are looking for a few families who live outside of Western North Carolina. However, we have visited Nashville, TN; Montgomery, AL; Washington, D.C.; Myrtle Beach, SC; and Gatlinburg, TN. So we would like to learn about some new areas other than those.

There is fun in it for you, too. Flat Stanley will arrive at your house with some brochures and pictures from our area as well. So you can learn about a new area, too.

Please leave a comment if you are interested and say what area you live in. We cannot wait to find out where we will be learning about this year!

Blessings, Dawn

  1. Hi there! I think this is an awesome idea! I would love to help out. :)
I live in Arizona, Phoenix area.

  2. We would be interested, if you are interested in learning about Maryland.

  3. Hey friend,

I'm happy to help, though we aren't too far from you. Not sure if you've been in this part of the state yet or not though. Let me know if you want a visitor to come here.

  4. Hi Dawn!! We would love to host in Western WA! If you're interested there's a flat traveler's yahoo group where you can send them also!

  5. What a fun idea! Thank you for telling me about it. I have not been visiting other blogs much this last week, so I would have missed this. We'd love to help you. My boys and I are planning a trip to Anchorage either late this month or early August. Sometimes mail from the lower 48 gets here within a day, but sometimes it takes a month! If you send a Flat Stanley to us now, he should be waiting for us at the air taxi service when we get there. I know of three other families here on HSB who might be interested, and all of us live in totally different areas of Alaska. We're in the bush of south central AK. Another family is in the interior. Another is in Juneau in the "tropical" southeast, and then Carol (threelittleladies) lives quite a bit south of us but still in southcentral. There may be others I haven't met yet. You can travel a couple hundred miles in Alaska and feel like you've entered a completely different world! Maybe those of us in Alaska could send Stanley around to each other, and then the last one could send him back to you.
    God bless,

  6. I think we would enjoy helping you out. We live in the Columbus, Ohio area. Although at this point, I'm not sure if we will be homeschooling the boys this fall or not. It has been quite a difficult year. We don't know if we are struggling with some degree of what you have been dealing with or if it is still just adjustments. Our boys have just been home for a year and a half from Russia. This idea that you are using for geography sounds like a lot of fun! Let me know if we can help.

  7. Yes, we'll do this with Williamsburg! The kids said that back in March, when we were visiting with their friends who were also in costume, some grandparents approached them and asked them to pose for a picture with Flat Stanley for their grandkids in CA.

  8. This sounds so neat. I am sadly outside of the US border. [0= I hope you all have a ton of fun with this and share share share on your blog with us ! I can't wait to see what people share. [0=
