Animal Shelter Field Trip

Our field trip group went to the animal shelter last week. Our county has a brand new Humane Society made up of several buildings. We visited the adoption center building, which was the same place where we found Boomer. They asked that we bring a donation of an item off their "Wanted List" in exchange for a tour. The list was long but somehow everyone attending brought bleach -- lol -- I guess we all had our minds on clean cages!

The tour started with the rules for visiting animals. Our tour guide also told us interesting facts about the center. Some of the unusual animals that have come into the processing side are raccoons, pot-bellied pigs, goats and a boa constrictor. I was pleased to find out that, once they make it from the processing center over to the adoption side, there is no time limit on how long they can sit there until they find their forever home.

We then visited the cat room. There were tons of cute cats, and our group was divided into three visiting rooms. We were then able to pet a cat. My girls were delighted. I like cats but am really more of a dog person and my dh likes cats but is allergic to them, so playing with a kitty was a special treat for my kids. The visiting rooms were so nice. They were like screened outside porches.

We then moved onto the dog room. Again, we got to visit with a puppy in one of the visiting outdoor rooms. The kids got to come forward and pet him one at a time. We also got to watch volunteers training an older dog to prepare him for adoption.

What a fun field trip! We had a smaller turnout this time, because so many people were afraid they would come home with a new pet! lol!

Blessings,
Dawn

  1. Lovely fieldtrip. I like the way the kids are able to interact with the staff and pets. And Boomer is getting so big! I adore the photo of him on the table...I know he is not suppose to be there but ...its cute!

  2. What a fun field trip, although I have to admit that I'd probably be reluctant to go. Between allergies and keeping up with my kiddos, I'm not as enthusiastic about pets as I once was, but I'm still such a softy when it comes to poor little orphan animals!

I'm glad your girls got to spend time with the cats!

  3. Oooh, that is a fun trip, but I would be too chicken to go, too. We are wanting a dog so bad, but feel we must wait until the house issue is settled.

  4. Oh, my daughter would have loved to have been on that field trip with you all. If she was allowed she would have a petting zoo around here. She wants evry pet to live at our house. We have two dogs. She's thrilled that tomorrow her Aunt is bringing their rabbits for us to sit for a couple of days.
