Friday Show and Tell ~ Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

A few days ago, we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday. We read lots of Dr. Seuss stories and talked in rhyme for the fun of it. We made a lap book with lots of Dr. Seuss stickers and did lots of Dr. Seuss math pages. The real highlight of the day was making our own Dr. Seuss Play-Doh characters. The kids loved making these. It kept them busy for a long time, which I really appreciated. (I was still a bit slow that day from the flu and needed anything that would slow down the kiddos.)

Allergy side note ~ Did you know that store-bought Play-Doh can cause a gluten allergy? A few weeks ago when we were at the beginning of our allergy journey, Tom Sawyer reacted to playing with Play-Doh. This time he wore plastic gloves. No reaction this time, thank goodness. I think his little body is getting stronger, and he can take tiny little bits of exposure. However, we won't be racing out to test that theory much.

We finished off our Dr. Seuss day with a video of The Cat and The Hat and a meal made of green eggs and ham. Green eggs were a big hit. They taste the same, don't you know!? We may have to have them again for St. Patrick's day.

Blessings, Dawn

  1. What a fun time! When mine were little we did Green Eggs and Ham day! Breakfast of green eggs and ham...and of course many books! We love Dr Suess! What a great idea to do a lapbook and take the day to celebrate.

  2. Another fun day! I love the play doh figures! :)

We don't use play doh because of wheat/gluten allergies, not to mention the dyes. I make my own. I posted the recipe on my blog, if you're interested.

    Hope you're feeling better!

  3. Oh, what fun! The green eggs actually didn't look as bad as I thought they might - I may have to try that for St. Patrick's Day as well. :) Tell your children "Well Done!" on their playdough renditions of Dr. Seuss characters - they're so cute!

Hope you're feeling back to yourself now and are over the flu. Have a wonderful weekend!

    Warmly,

  4. Fun celebration! Those play doh critters are cute. Years ago, I had a student in my class who was alergic to Play Doh. I could only use homemade that year.

  5. The Dr. Suess day sounds like lots of fun. We've done the green eggs and ham.

I didn't know playdough could cause allergic reactions though. Thanks for the tip.

  7. I just heard about how people celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on Tuesday when someone linked on my TWT. You all look like you had a FUN time ! I still don't know if I could muster up enough to eat the green eggs. LOL But I am sure the boys would. [0; I NEVER thought of playdough being a gluten allergy but it makes TOTAL sense. With ALL my ds allergies thank goodness glueten wasn't a issue. He has so many if gluten was a issue I don't know how I would have fed him. [0;

Thank you for sharing such a FUN S&T.

  8. Fun, fun, fun!

Playdough is great for keeping little hands busy. They made such wonderful creations.

Yes, I did know about the gluten. I'm sorry he has a problem with that. I'm sure you will find a way to make homemade gluten-free playdough!

I hope you are stronger and well each day.

  9. I think it's awesome that your kids would eat green eggs. Mine would not when they were young enough to be reading Green Eggs and Ham.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  10. Way to go Mom! Looks like you made a great hit. Last year we were invited to a dinner with a Suess theme. It was a lot of fun too.

  11. I got on your blog by random. I read for a long time. recently it was confirmed that my daughter has some 'problems', we don't know what yet. I was very encouraged by your home's sample to drasctically change your diet. I would like to hear more about what you eat.

  14. Here is a recipe for gluten free play dough. You just throw it in the crock pot.

  15. I just LOVE Dr. Suess. I have done a few unit studies on him just for the excuse to get the book out again. :)

Thanks for the tip about gluten in play dough. I have one very allergic kid and this is great advice. I generally make edible playdough, but he often is near it at friend's houses.
