Week 2 ~ Time of Wonder

On My Mind ~ I am busy trying to make sure that my family is returning to full health.  We are just a week away from going to Duke and we need everyone in good health to be allowed to stay at Ronald McDonald house.  I think we are almost there.  Tom Sawyer is still tired and grouchy, but much better than last week.  The antibiotic he was on had corn in it, which is not helping his mood (he is allergic to corn).

What's Cooking ~ We have a bumper crop of tomatoes this year.  The kids learned how to make sun-dried tomatoes in the dehydrator this week.  We are also making salsa and freezing tomatoes for sauce.

In Our Homeschool ~ We rowed Time of Wonder this week.  The kids enjoyed doing a lap book, learning about sailboats, writing about God's wonderful creations, reading books about Hurricanes and making their very own cucumber boats and floated them in the river.  We also started our study of the 50 states.  We learned about Maine and had a fish fry with blueberries.
We also are getting into the swing of all of our daily lessons.  The kids are doing a rotation this year with spelling, math, and typing.  While one is practicing typing and another is doing Teaching Textbooks on the laptop, the third is doing All About Spelling with me.  It is going very well this way. So far I am very impressed with All About Spelling.  We are also doing a good job with daily journaling.  Our sensory bucket this week was a bucket of shells.  The kids really enjoyed playing with them and trying to hear the ocean.  Since we didn't make it to the lake with a beachfront this year, they really enjoyed playing with that bucket.  We continue to really enjoy lap booking and having a literature -based approach to our learning.

Counting Blessings ~ This week was rough, but better than the last few weeks.  Everyone is returning to health.  I managed to get the gallon of spilled paint off the floor.  We are mostly ready for company next week and our trip to Duke Medical Hospital.  The kids are settling nicely into our new routine.  The neighborhood kids go back to school next week.  Although we have enjoyed having playmates all summer, it is time to buckle down and for my doorbell to stop ringing (lol).

I Am Praying ~  That the minivan's issue is not the transmission (even though it seems obvious) and that the crime wave in our neighborhood resolves soon.  Also for the health of my whole family.

I am joining Friday Collage and homeschool mother's journal.

Blessings, Dawn

  1. I wondered if you were able to find antibiotics that were corn-free. Sorry to hear that Tom Sawyer had to take the antibiotic, but I'm glad that it helped.

    Your tomatoes look beautiful!

    Praying for you, my friend!

  3. Sounds like a great Maine-themed week (I'm from Maine): blueberries and a book by Robert McCloskey! We love literature-based unit studies and lapbooks, too.

  4. Yay for lapbooks. I'm not familiar with that book, we may have to check it out.

  5. McCloskey is one of our favorite authors. Though I haven't read Time of Wonder. Will be looking into it now :-) Great week of learning. I like your rotation idea, sounds like a wonderful way to move through lessons.
