Anne's Transcript ~ Career Education

This course was designed to help Anne explore her options in future careers. She explored three different careers and environments. She completed this course with 164 hours.

Teacher Assistant ~ Anne was a teacher assistant for a Ballet III class. She modeled moves for the students, helped them prepare to go on stage and occasionally substitute taught the class on her own. She completed 34 hours. This job gave Anne the opportunity to see what teaching is like.

Dance Apprenticeship ~ Anne received an apprenticeship to dance with the ACDT Adult Company. This opportunity is ongoing and only a few hours are reflected in this course. She is taking one of the ACDT dance classes. She proved that she was capable of keeping up with the complicated choreography and executing it with beauty. She is truly committed to dance and was granted a role as an understudy in the 40th  anniversary of (ACDT) show that will be performed this coming summer. Her rehearsal hours are reflected in her Performing Arts course. She received 38 hours for apprenticeship with this course, but she continues to be an apprentice with the ACDT Adult Company.

Employee at a Consignment Shop ~ Anne interviewed and received a job working at a consignment shop. She works two mornings a week for a total of eight hours a week. She tags clothing, puts clothing and toys on the store racks and shelving, changes the display windows, dresses mannequins, and pulls outdated clothes. Her employer is very pleased with her work so far and she loves the job. She will continue with this job for the foreseeable future. This course records her first 92 hours of work at the consignment shop.

She received an A for this course.

Anne's Transcript ~ Physical Education

I am still trying to transfer Anne's credits from last year to our blog records from my lesson planners. Hopefully, I will be all caught up by early next week.

Physical Education ~ Anne is a very passionate dancer and spends much more time dancing than is recorded here. However, I recorded her structured classes for the  majority of one calendar school year. Her summer dance intensives and lots of extra rehearsals and practice times are not recorded. All performances are listed under her Performing Arts credit.

Ballet ~ During this course, Anne took three forms of ballet and danced at two different studios. She took Pointe, Russian Ballet and Cecchetti Ballet. She took 107 hours of ballet classes. She took the Cecchetti Exam for level 4 and passed with honors.

Contemporary Dance ~ Anne also took five different classes in contemporary dance. Modern and Jazz were weekly classes for the entire school year. She also did a workshop class that rotated throughout the school year with mini-intensives in Hip Hop, West Coast Swing and Salsa. She attended 91 hours of contemporary dance classes.

She received an A for this course and completed 198 hours of classes. She passed her Cecchetti exam with honors and received excellent marks in all of her dance classes, including lead roles in performances and acceptance as an apprentice to the studio's Adult Dance Company for the next school year.

Biology ~ Anne's Transcript

I am playing a bit of catch up. Anne finished this course months ago. We used lots of different resources to accomplish 144 hours of her Biology course. She did all assignments and participated in all field trips and dissections. She received a 95% for this course. Below is a list of the resources we used.

The textbook that was our spine for this course was Biology by Prentice Hall. We also used Charles Darwin for Kids with 21 Activities.

Field Trips ~

• Serpentarium Magic ~ We learned about and saw 200 snakes.
• She did a year-long study of the Biltmore Gardens and Greenhouses. We went 11 times.
• Our class visited The Global Wildlife Safari in Louisiana.
• Our class visited The Great Smokey Mountain National Park and saw lots of wildlife.
• We visited Kiawah Island and saw conches, egrets, deer, Eastern Brown Pelicans, horseshoe crabs, jellyfish and other fish.
• We visited Charleston Tea Plantation and learned about the genetic building blocks of tea.
• She visited the Hendersonville Aquarium and saw baby sharks and lots of coral.
• She visited the local arboretum and learned how biology plays a role in making perfume.

English I is a combination of great literature and literature-based movies. Anne completed all of her assignments, participated in all field trips to see plays, listened to all family read-aloud books and joined our monthly literature movie club. She put effort into her assignments and produced several short writing assignments drawing comparisons between movies and books. She received an 89% for this course. She completed the course with 144 hours.

Anne's Transcript ~ Sign Language I ~ 9th Grade

Anne fell in love with Sign Language in middle school. She took a year of Beginner's American Sign Language (ASL) at Elevate (a local homeschool co-op). None of those hours are reflected in this course, but that class did launch her love for signing. For her second year of ASL, we created our own program at home since we could not find a course for her to take in a group setting. She used YouTube as her main curriculum and forged ahead on her own. She focused on vocabulary and now has around 1,000 signs memorized.

She found that YouTube had a plentiful array of songs that had been translated into sign language. However, they were mostly translated into Pigeon Sign English (PSE), which is the most popular way for a deaf person to "listen" to a song. However, PSE does not follow the same syntax or grammar as ASL. The vocabulary is the same between the two forms of sign language. We decided that it would be acceptable for her to concentrate on songs, even if they were translated into PSE for this year, since she was focusing on vocabulary memorization and conversational comprehension.

She memorized 98 songs this year and performed each and every one of them. She maintained accurate speed with the song and was able to go back and perform whatever song I requested on her mid-term and final exams. She tends to sign even when she is talking and loves to quiz the rest of us on our rather poorer signing vocabulary.

She went for an interview at Elevate to see what level she should be placed in next year for ASL classes. The interview was held in ASL and Anne held her own. She was placed in level II for next year and will have the opportunity to increase her grammar and syntax use. She is currently considering a career as a sign language interpreter and researching how to combine her love of sign language with her love of dance. She would love to have a career in both.

She received an (A) 100% for this course with 144 hours of practice and performance of the songs recorded.

Disclaimer for those who wish to learn this way ~ To my knowledge, the songs above have no curse words. However, my daughter did have difficulty finding songs that were completely free of profanity, and so after she started running out of "clean" songs to learn, with my approval she learned many more songs that did have curse words in them. We do not use curse words in our home, and I knew she could be trusted not to use them outside of this course.

Performing Arts Half Credit ~ 9th Grade ~ Anne

Anne earned a half credit (90 hours) for performing arts this year. She performed in a variety of shows and worked very hard on all of her characters and dances. She danced many styles this year, including jazz, ballet, pointe, modern, hip hop, salsa and modern limone.

Alice in Wonderland ~ Anne performed in eight shows of Alice in Wonderland. She had the main character role of the caterpillar which required her to take weeks of aerial arts classes to learn how to perform on silks. She also performed as a garden gate on pointe as well as a jazzy cat. She did an excellent job and put forth all of her passion and effort into the performances.

The Nutcracker and The Mouse King ~ She performed in four shows of The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. She had the main character role of the princess, which was a partnering ballet piece. She also danced with the Junior Company in various roles, including elastic doll, guard, cat, pop rocks, sailor and a sugar mask. She did a wonderful job of getting through many quick costume changes (some of them only a minute long).

Posing in Three Tableaus with the Adult Company ~ Anne was delighted to be invited to perform in three tableaus during the Fringe Festival. They performed on the streets at locations around the downtown to support the LaZoom bus tour. They would set up at different stops and then hold a pose for seven or eight minutes while the tour bus unloaded and looked at them. It was a great experience. They did a prom scene, bachelorette party scene and a winter at the beach scene.

Posing in a Tableaus was a new experience.

Hola Children's Festival ~ Anne really enjoyed doing a salsa dance piece with Junior Company at this festival. It was another outdoor dance experience.

The Winter Showcase ~ The winter showcase is one of Anne's favorite events each year. It is an opportunity for the students to show some of their own work in addition to a sneak peek at what they are working on. Anne performed in four shows of the showcase. She participated in 10 dances each show.
