I am recording the Big Teen's high school summaries. This one is for his algebra.
The Big Teen learned algebra in the 12th grade. For Algebra I, he used Teaching Textbooks. I really liked this program. It was very well laid out and helped him work somewhat independently. Certainly, a child without special needs would have no trouble using this program independently.
In addition to Teaching Textbooks, we used several algebra computer games and drills on the Internet. He also enjoyed the Living Math book, A Gebra Named Al. He survived Algebra and learned enough to have a general understanding of the concepts. It was by far the toughest course for him to get through in his entire high school career. We are both so glad he is all done!
Blessings, Dawn
There is so much buzz about this curriculum (Teaching Textbooks) and it is all good--three cheers for the Sabouris! I used the Pre-Algebra for our oldest, and I'm sold. I took the plunge and have already bought the Math 7 for our son, and will buy the Algebra for the oldest next year (unless you're interested in selling yours?) It was more money for those two programs than I've spent total for 3 kids in some years, but well worth it, especially for the oldest, who put gray hairs on my head after having to repeat myself regarding math rules and best practices. Now, she can take ownership for her own learning, and her confidence with math is going sky high.
ReplyDeleteI saw that you listed different techniques for creative writing for your son. We'll be using some of these ideas, in addition to some similar ideas, as a creative type of narration as our high schooler gets going, too. Our two once blogged, and I hate that they stopped--this was a wonderful way to express themselves, and they got to meet more homeschooling friends from all over the globe. Oh, well.
I have Teaching Textbooks in the back of my mind for future use ;-). High school is not that far off really, for my 11yo, but I'd rather not concentrate on that too much yet - too scawwwy lol.
ReplyDeleteI started a new blog for all pics, videos etc; it's invitation only. If you'd like one please send me your email & I'll send you an invite; would love to have you there !
Will still be blogging here too :)
Congratulations to your son and you! My dd is finishing 9th grade and I need to start thinking transcript. I thought I'd have everything organized in prep for it by now but this move has taken over my life! =)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your sweet encouragement! We do have to meet sometime. Sometime we'll need to get to your part of the country. My husband gets two weeks off only for vacation this year (new job) and I am plugging for a leisurely time in CW. He might want to use some of that time in NY to see his mom. When you're in the area again, e-mail me. We can meet in DC or where ever.
BTW my husband loves his job. Your info was so helpful and helped us to decide to live further out. We love this area. He loves his drive to the Pentagon. He loves not living near the Pentagon. Etc, etc, etc. His drive in is at least as good as it was in TX where he had a 45 minute commute one way. He found a route here he really likes. His hours are really great too and we see more of him than we used to.
Blessings,
Laurie
