Two Parties and Snowflakes

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! We had our first Christmas party of the season Friday morning. We hosted a Five in a Row (FIAR) party for our support group. We only had seven kids but the group is slowly growing. Our FIAR book this month was Warm As Wool. The kids all brought a warm item of clothing to the party so that we could send it to Covenant House, a shelter for homeless teens in New York City. We then did a few crafts, ate lots of great food and played for a few hours. Because all the children at the party were special needs, we had to do lots of balancing of what everyone needed to be comfortable. However, it all went well with minimal tears. In fact, all the tears were at the very end when all the sensory children had had enough.

The dog was a very big hit.

After the party we had to rest and prepare for Round Two. Friday night, we were invited to our huge Family Support Network party for special needs kids. It covers five counties, and there were a several hundred kids present. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera!! Also unfortunately, Goldilocks was not able to attend because  of her behavior. Often she can only handle one event a day or even every few days. She just could not pull herself back together after party one and was being very rude. Grandma saved the day and babysat her so that the rest of us could still go.

The lady who painted faces did a great job. Here are two of my children. Tom Sawyer is about to fall asleep standing there. LOL

Tom Sawyer won a gingerbread house for coming in closest in an estimation game. I guess all that work we are doing in estimation is paying off.

Today, we are getting snow flurries outside! They will probably not amount to much, but it is nice and Christmassy anyway.

Blessings, Dawn

  1. Love the face painting. That is very clever!

  2. Looks like you had a lot of fun. The dog is adorable!

  3. The dog is cute! Looks like you had a lot of fun!

  4. I like your Advent idea! You have a great list of books there. That should be a lot of fun for the kids (and you) to snuggle up and read all those neat books you got for them.

I'm looking forward to the unveiling of the pretty room...

  5. Wow. That face painting is wonderful! And the gingerbread house is adorable. Looks like a lot of fun!

  6. Dawn, first off I wanted to say the Advent Book idea is GENIUS! Wow, do you come up with this stuff by yourself? I so wanted to do something that included Advent this year...this would have been perfect. I'm hoping I'll remember next year :-)!

Also wanted to add that I've been reading down through your latest posts and am so impressed with your dedication to be a great teacher. You're a natural and even when you could get so discouraged you push on through with a determination that I wish I could say I have. I give up too easily. Thanks for being such an inspiration!

Blessings to you and yours during this beautiful Christmas season! Julie

  7. How fun!! Two parties in one day!! I'd be exhausted! Looks like you had a great time. I love face painting. Enjoy the snow!! I love and miss snow this time of year!

  8. The kids are too cute, and it sounds as if fun was had by all. I can relate to the dog being a big hit--our dog provides plenty of character with his antics around here.

    God bless you guys, Dawn.
