Do your children play games?

Computer games you ask?  No!  Do your children play board and card games?  Is this becoming a lost pastime in our modern world?  Should games be included in our academic time?  I have noticed among some of my friends that their children do not know how to play any non-computer games.  In some cases, they don't even own any board games in their homes.  However, I know many others that do have games and play them often.  I personally think that games have a valuable place in our homes.  They provide turn taking, cooperation skills, thinking skills, and dealing with being the winner or the loser, just to name a few.  I love games and taught my kids early to play them.  Favorites around here for the younger set are War, Go Fish, Candy Land, and Teddies on Tour.  The older of us never get tired of Apples to Apples, Scrabble, and Worst Case Scenario.  Today was a game day around here.  The little kids played lots of games after they had made it through reading and math and, yes, I counted it as school.  Here is a look at them in action.

Also, for my Mother's birthday we played Scrabble.  I just had to take a photo of this, because I managed to get rid of a Q and a Z on the same word!  I thought that was a super good feat.  LOL!

So here's the question ~ Do you play board games and which are your favorites?  I am always looking for new games to add to the shelves.

Blessings, Dawn

  1. We love Cranium games.

For your crew i would highly recommend Cariboo followed by Sounds of the Seashore or Balloon Lagoon. In a few years you must get the Family Fun Game...we love to play that in teams.

Then there are the good old favorites like Hide and Seek or Simon Says. Can't forget those, though they aren't board games.

We love geocaching, too. The BSA is considering adding that to the Merit Badges....my son is so excited that he could get credit for doing it.

  2. Great post! We love games too. My older kids play quite often esp. with the youth group. We just had a rained in birthday party and did nothing but board games! Games were set up everywhere. We love games like checkers, chess, stratego and pool (table). Board games for the younger ones we like Chutes & LAdders, Candyland, Noah's Rainbow Race, Memory and Match-up games. We love Cranium games and Scategories and Taboo are favorites along with Whoonu? (Cranium) which I hear is a lot like Apples to Apples! We also like Operation and we play homemade file folder games. (I plan to post about these games soon. You can use them for anything you are studying!)

We also like UNO (card) game- it is great for colors and numbers. I know there are many more because we love games but these are the ones I could think of. We like doing family game night sometimes too- if it isn't movie night or family home movies night! :)

    Have a great week!

  3. No computer games here, but we do plenty of board games. We love Mexican Train. A friend of my mom's got that for us when she found out that we like games. I got Blokus last Christmas which I love. I've posted game playing on my blog with pictures...I think under New Years and then under Family for my birthday. We have game night every New Years and we usually play games on my birthday instead of traditional school (if its in the middle of the week). My dd loves geography games.

  4. We like Cranium games like Cadoo & Zooreka, Scrabble too; we actually have a ton of games but don't play too often. Ds (my higher functioning one) has some "control" issues with winning so it's not often pleasant, but he also needs the practice.

  6. we like monopoly. We must have 4 different versions and DS even created his own version for fun.

We did just buy Catch Phrase. For the big kids and adults but fun. (just preview and mark out yucky words on the cards first).

  7. We love board games, and we gazillions of them. And, yes, they are definitely school time worthy! We enjoy a lot of the ones mentioned~scattegories and Scattergories, Jr., some of the Cranium games, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Battleship, Uno. We also like the talking Sorry card game, Chess (with arrows showing where you can move each piece), In a Pickle, Great States Jr, 221B Baker Street (for older), Herd Your Horses, SkipBo, Pictionary (regular, jr, and Bible), Memory, Smart Mouth (word game). Those are the ones I can think of right now. When my older girls were 10-14 age, they used poster board and made up their own board games.

  8. we have a ton of them, though I've had to thin them out over the years, passing on some of the younger set games to others. I may have to post on this one also sometime. One favorite game is pictionary and I love Upwords, which is a variation of Scrabble. Being in a family of non-spellers has it's drawbacks though. No one wants to play with me(sob, sob) so I just play the word games by myself. Your kids look like they play very nicely and why not count it as school. Games work across the educational spectrum.

  9. Board games are great for school! They encourage thinking skills, such as logic and strategy. I taught my oldest to play chess and checkers last year, and he can't get enough of them! He also likes Scrabble, Battleship and Monopoly. My youngest likes to "play" games, as long as he can move pieces around as he sees fit! lol

  10. We love Battleship, Dino-opoly, Life, and Connect Four. The little ones love Candyland, Operation, and go fish. We also have some educational games-Skeletons in the Closet, Lewis and Clark, The Allowance Game, and I just got one on Africa-to learn the countries of Africa. I think I need to plan a movie and game playing day!!

Most of our favorites have been mentioned and re-mentioned in your comments already, but I do have to add in Stratego and Risk...my 8 yo DS would play the two of them all day if we could! My not quite 3 yo loves Cranium's Cariboo, as well as a set of big animal dominoes.

We love games at our house! Some of our favorites are card games including Crazy Eights, Hand and Foot, Spades -- Dominoes, including Cardinal Mexican Train and 42 -- Scrabble, Scattergories, Trivial Pursuit, Probe, Risk . . . you name it, we probably have played it, like to play it, or might play it in the future! And, yes, my kids also enjoy computer games on a limited basis.

Right now our favorite is Killer Bunnies (google it if you haven't heard of it - it's a hoot!) Our 8 year old and 10 year old can play right along with the adults around here and we all enjoy it.

We also like word games like Scrabble, Word Rummy, and Take 2. Card games like Hand and Foot. Dice games like Pig. Our closet is full of games, but we don't play most of them very much. I think as the kids get older we will get back into them.

    Have a great weekend,

  15. Hi Dawn,

I am enjoying your blog very much. We love board games too! The only computer game the girls play is Zoo Tycoon (which is educational and very cool..about building a zoo business). A fav card game of ours that i didn't see mentioned, is Quiddler. A word game with cards...love it! A new favorite is Pirates of the Caribbean Life. Instead of getting a job as in regular Life, you get a ship and mascots..pirate theme. Fun! "Simply Suspect" is another new family favorite board game. I can't remember where i got it..somewhere on the Internet. It is along the lines of Clue but more fun, I think. Those are my top picks for now! I want to plan more game days with other homeschool friends in the coming year and encourage the kids to bring a game they want to share with their friends. Ping pong is another family favorite.

    Stop by and visit! Brenda
